The Tyne Theatre and Opera House, currently operated by SMG Europe as the Mill VolvoTyne Theatre, is a grade one listed theatre rated “in the top 4% of listed buildings” by English Heritage and is afforded a three star (the highest) rating by the Theatres Trust “a very fine theatre of the highest theatrical and architectural quality”. The importance of the architectural and theatrical heritage of the building is also recognised by The Association of Historic Theatres in Europe and OISTAT (the International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Technicians and Architects).

The Tyne Theatre and Opera House Preservation Trust became the freehold owner of the building in 2008.

The Trust, with funding from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund commissioned Simpson & Brown Architects to produce a full conservation study and policy for the theatre.

Other work funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund includes an access plan by Burdus Access Management and an education and exhibition scoping exercise. Brian Debnam and Associates Ltd are responsible for the business planning and for coordinating the overall project.

Simpson & Brown Architects have been engaged by the Trust to produce an architectural feasibility study and options analysis for the development and restoration of the theatre over the next 5 years.
