Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust invites schools to take a ‘Journey to The Heart of a Theatre’. Following a successful pilot project, Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust is pleased to offer an exciting new glimpse at life backstage at The Tyne Theatre. Brought to life by actors from the Newcastle College Performance Academy in a script by playwright and historical TIE specialist Stewart Howson directed by Helen Dobson, pupils will follow a journey through the historic Theatre, its magnificent 19th Century auditorium stage and original Victorian under-stage machinery (unique in Britain!). As they progress through the theatre, the children will become witnesses to a plot by a rival impresario to shut the theatre by paying the leading actors to walk out leaving a pair of scared young understudies to take over. This pair will need the children’s moral support to overcome their fear of the tough audience, the auditorium and a journey through the stage. Will our couple make it onto stage to make their mark in a classic scene from children’s literature and keep the Theatre live? With their new friends from your school by their sides they face their fears as they make their debuts… and triumph? These tales are communicated in a one hour long tour throughout the Tyne Theatre. Followed by a one hour long workshop; based on the information gained from the tour and tailored to the age range of class/attendees. The tour is targeted at school students in key stage 2 (year 5 and 6) and at key stage 3 (years 7, 8, 9) the programme supports studies in history – the Victorian and Edwardian eras, Drama, English and citizenship. Tours and workshops are taking place after the February half team and throughout March 2012.
