Brian Debnam Ltd is an arts and cultural consultancy practice which calls upon the skills and experience of its principal Brian Debnam working in association with a number of associate individuals and companies including Joined up North, Roger Lancaster and Associates, xsite architects, GAPP Architects, Cultures in Regeneration and Peter Stark South Africa.


Recent and current projects include Business Planning for a new Arts Resource in Spennymoor County Durham, Project Management for the Johannesburg Development Agency of the Newtown Cultural Precinct, feasibility work on the Tyne Theatre and Opera House for Newcastle City Council, a moving image media strategy for Northumberland for Northern Film and Media and the Northumberland Strategic Partnership and a national touring strategy for Live Theatre.

In 2008 our continuing client profile includes the Newbiggin Maritime Centre, The Tyne Theatre and Opera House, the South Africa State Theatre, Ballet Lorent, Sedgefield Borough Council, Sunderland City Council and Cultures in Regeneration South Africa.

In 2007 we have worked on projects for Bishop Auckland College, Newtown Management District SA, Cultures in Regeneration SA, Tyne Theatre and Opera House Preservation Trust, Newbiggin Heritage Partnership, Wear Valley District Council, Sedgefield Borough Council, Sakoba Dance Company, The Cyprus Government Department for Education and the Arts, Johannesburg Property Company, The International Opera Foundation Eszterháza, The Eastern Cape Government Department for Sport Recreation Arts and Culture, The North East Institute, Live Theatre, and Bassline SA.


Brian Debnam studied geography at Durham University, arts administration at the Polytechnic of Central London, theatre direction at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney and financial administration at the University of South Australia.

During a career in arts and cultural management of over 30 years he has worked in UK and Australia in the management of touring organisations and arts buildings, as a senior arts manager for funding bodies, a principal of an arts training college, a theatre director, producer and designer. From 1999 to 2003 he was acting General Manager and then Director of Resources for The Sage Gateshead a 70 million pound lottery funded project

His consultancy practice currently provides project management services, organisational development and feasibility studies for arts, cultural and educational capital and revenue projects and peripatetic management expertise for organisations in UK and South Africa. He is chair of Board of the acclaimed national touring theatre company Theatre Sans Frontiere which is based in Hexham, UK.
