SOWETO MUSIC CENTRE

In June 2008, Brian Debnam and Jenny Dewar travelled to South Africa to work with the team in Johannesburg on the new development of the Orlando ekhaya Site in Soweto to carry out a number of consultation meetings with local and national stakeholders in the music industry as well as international specialsits.

The picture on the left shows the dam at the Orlando eKhaya site. The propsed music centre will be situated on the dam to the right of the picture.

The flat area at the front of the picture will be decking which will span the edge of the dam.

The Cooling Towers at Orlando eKhaya are shown in the picture on the right. These cooling towers are a huge iconic landmark on the outskirts of Soweto. They have now been made into a sports facility - you can even bunjee jump in between them!

The Isango power station - another iconic building is situated next to the cooling towers, and is to be developed as a new retail centre.

The power station was originally built to provide power to Johannesburg, Soweto was not catered for.

The redevelopment of the power station will be a major part of the area's regeneration.

There are plans to build a train station at the site, with links to Johannesburg and Soweto, allowing access, and decreasing parking needs

Around the proposed muisc centre, there will be further developments of residential, retail and recreational facilities, as well as a nature reserve and a bird sanctuary. The university accross the dam is also devloping it's capmus.
